Uncovering the Past: A T. rex Ancestor's Story
In a fascinating discovery, researchers have shed light on an ancient relative of the iconic T. rex. This find, made in a British Columbia campground, reveals a lighter and faster tyrannosaur, offering a glimpse into the evolutionary path of these mighty predators.

It all started with a curious rock, spotted by Rick Lambert during a hike near the Alberta boundary. His keen eye, honed from childhood fossil hunts, and a helpful squirrel led to an incredible find: the first tyrannosaur skull ever uncovered in B.C.
Identifying the Species
University of Alberta researchers, led by Colton Coppock, studied the partial skull impression, dating back 76 million years. They identified it as belonging to a horned dinosaur, Gorgosaurus libratus, based on unique characteristics like bone sutures and the rod-like structure in its upper jaw.
A Faster, Lighter Tyrannosaur
Gorgosaurus, a cousin of T. rex, was lighter and more agile. With longer limbs and triangular horns, it resembled a faster version of its famous relative. This discovery highlights the diversity within the tyrannosaur family and provides insights into their evolutionary adaptations.
A Juvenile Gorgosaurus
The researchers also determined that the dinosaur was likely a juvenile. Its teeth suggest a precise cutting technique, indicating a different feeding strategy from the brute force approach of adult tyrannosaurs.
Expanding Gorgosaurus' Range
The study reveals that Gorgosaurus traversed a much larger area than previously thought, similar to modern-day grizzly bears and cougars. Its range extended from northern B.C. to northern Montana, covering an impressive 198,000 square kilometers.
